College of Nursing (CON) is an integral part of the Christian Medical College(CMC), situated in Vellore about 130 kms. west of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, South India. CMC is a non-profit organization with a diverse and an interdenominational community, the motto being , “Not to be Ministered unto, but to Minister” It consists of a 2500 bedded tertiary hospital, Medicalcollege, a Nursing college and various Allied Health programmes together providing 88 recognizedtraining programmes, at the Diploma, Graduate, Masters and Ph.D levels. The institution was founded by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, daughter of Dr. John Scudder, who was a medical missionary in S. India. Her decision was made one night, when three Indianwomen died in child birth, as the prevailing custom in India would not allow a male doctor to conduct the delivery. The young Ida saw in these tragedies God’s call to take up the life of a medical missionary to meet the needs of women and children in this region. CMC began as a one bed-clinic in 1900 and has grown to what it is today, with all specialties, up to date diagnostic and treatment facilities and a vibrant student body. The College of Nursing occupies a prominent place among the premier Nursing institutions in India. It is one of the two WHO Collaborating Centers (WHOCC) for Nursing and Midwifery Development in the country and also a Member of the Global network of WHO CC’s for Nursing and Midwifery worldwide.
