The original UNIX operating system was invented by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson in 1969 on a DEC PDP-7 at Bell Labs. In the years since, development has splintered into several UNIX variants, some proprietary and some open source.1 All of these “UNIX-like” systems are bound by a set of standards called POSIX which ensures that code developed on one POSIX compliant operating system can be recompiled on another.
