There was a time when higher education was equated to courses abroad or a handful of premier institutes in India. This was pursued successfully by only a select few. India in the last three decades has seen a sharp increase in this rate and it now stands at 68 %. Yes, that’s right. According to a recent statistics there is a clear cut rise of 68% in the number of students who pursue a post graduate program within India. With the rise in number of students wanting to study higher, the number of colleges offering the post graduate and doctorate are also rising by the day. BM bureau talks to students and institutes alike, in its attempt to capture the management schools below the Deccan belt and analyze what draws students to the colleges down south. In the survey of south Indian states like  Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka  and Andhra Pradesh, we found that students opt to learn at south based colleges for the following factors.

A Surge in IT and consulting sectors.

The IT and ITeS sector has generated massive employment in the past 3 decades and continues the trend of providing jobs. With online shopping, social media and cloud computing flourishing more than ever before, there is great demand for IT based management professionals in e-commerce and the IT businesses and consumer firms in the south Indian cities of Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum. New management verticals like delivery management, product management, service management, operations management and other technical management jobs are on the upsurge to support these IT/ITes sectors.

 TCS recently hired 20,000 post graduates from south India in 2013 and other organizations like Wipro, Infosys, IBM and Dell among others also add highly to the employment rate. After Bangalore – the silicon city of the country, Pune is also on a hiring sphere. The IT and ITeS sector are likely to grow 12-15% in the year 2014 and Bangalore, Chennai and Pune are the top 3 preferred cities for these technical management jobs.

 With the immense opportunities that the government has to offer to the IT/ITeS companies a number of MNC’s are investing in India. Companies like HCL Technologies, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, Capgemini, Amazon, Delloitte Consultancy and Microsoft Corporation among others are highly investing in south Indian minds.

Better ROI, dependable placements.

The fee structure of almost all the south colleges were collected and studied closely. Mostly they fall at the range of Rs.7,00,000 – 15,00,000. This includes two year full time tuition fee, hostel if residential, mess and food and also common charges for using labs, examination and other resources within a school. In few colleges it also includes a laptop, Blazer and basic materials and few reference books which are mandatory. Apart from it the cost will go higher for other reasons like Travel expenses in this two years, study materials, medical expenses, living expenses, parties, gift and clothing. Adding to this cost the important opportunity cost to be taken is the loss of income that could have been earned if the students were to take up employment. Approximately the overall cost is to be calculated at the range from Rs.10,00,000 – 20,00,000 for the overall period of two years.

Many of the south based colleges now have international tie-ups, which have brought in scope for student exchange programs as well as international placements for students. The starting salary packages vary from Rs.3, 00,000 to 16,00,000 based on the college .The top 15 colleges are having averages from Rs.10,00,000 – 17,50,000. Whereas the average salary packages of next 15 colleges vary from Rs.4,50,000 – 10,00,000. And the good thing is they are giving 100 percent placements as like top 25 colleges. But the status of next 60 colleges is more or less similar and the placement trend is not always positive. When the lowest and the highest salary packages are taken into consideration for the Top 15 colleges it varies from Rs. 4,50,000 – 6,50,000 and Rs. 14,00,000 – 24,00,000 (International placements apart). With this ROI, students are now opting for learning choices down south.

Safety and cultural sensitivity.

When asked on what else made them choose south based colleges, students opined that south India is safer especially for women. Although India in general is considered more safe than universities abroad, where there are racial threats and fears of being a minority group, students said that sexual assaults and ragging were almost non –existent in southern colleges.

Further the colleges down south have strict laws against ragging or violence against their students. This is seen to be one of the keen factors for at least women top scorers to pick south B schools, statistics say. A few articulated the values given to culture and ethnicity down south and said that it felt more like ‘ being home’ for candidates based from the south Indian states. Food was also one of the most favored factors by south Indian students who talked to us about being unable to forgo south Indian staple meals !

Government policies, funds, scholarships.

The technical education system in the country can be broadly classified into three categories – Central Government funded institutions, State Government/State-funded institutions & Self-financed institutions. The 65 Centrally funded institution of technical science and management education are as under:

  • IITs – 15
  • IIMs – 7
  • IISc, Bangalore – 1
  • IISERs – 5
  • NITs – 20
  • IIITs – 4
  • NITTTRs – 4
  • Others (SPA, ISMU, NERIST,SLIET, NITIE & NIFFT, CIT) – 9
  • Total – 65

Of these more than 60% of the institutions are based in Southern India. The state governments of Kerala, Tamil nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have a special counsel set up for diverting funds to higher education and to empower needy students. Every year students who have scored well in the entrance examinations but who are unable to provide for their fees are adopted by such government bodies who provide these students as much as 100% scholarship. Institutes like LIBA and Xavier group offer concessions to minority Christian groups. Also the government of India provides consultation service to the interested international students through Education Consultants of India (Ed.CIL). Thus one can get all the information about the Indian education system, cost of education, duration, visa, accommodation facilities even before landing up in India.

Every south Indian state has numerous state and private banks which offer loans to the management students at low rates of interest. With all these aids, a student can easily pursue his management dream in South India.
